The Matador - Gretchen Peters

Alt-rock/Americana. Unexpected story of a woman groupie who ambiguously shacks up for a time with a bullfighter, with some awesome figurative language. Peters is up there with Jason Isbell when it comes to songwriters writing unique lyrics today.

The Music Fog version of The Matador with just her on acoustic guitar and her husband, Barry Walsh, on accordion, is the one to check out.

Some others of hers worth listening to:

  • Five Minutes (also the Music Fog version)
  • On a Bus to St. Cloud (perhaps her signature song, also the Music Fog version)
  • Idlewild (a great music video of this one, with film clips, including home videos, from the 1950s and early 1960s)
  • Independence Day (a hit for Martina McBride; Gretchen has her own versions, including this haunting one with just a solo piano)
