You were looking for legendary guitarists, but I haven't seen you review Tommy Bolin. All is work is stellar, especially with James Gang, their 'Bang' album, but I would suggest a first pass "Post Toastee" from Tommy Bolin's second album, Private Eyes. Once you hear this, you will want to explore much more. Unfortunately, he died a tragic early death.

You really need to listen to "Post Toastee". Basically, anything by Bolin is great. He really got notoriety on Billy Cobham's highly regarded "Spectrum" album. Not my style but incredible studio musicians. But Bolin's 2 studio albums are among the top 3 of my life.
